Daryl C. W. O'Shea - Penetanguishene Ward 2 Councillor Candidate

About

Daryl is running for a position on Penetanguishene Town Council as a Ward 2 Councillor. Ward 2 is composed of the area North of Robert St. E., (and East of Main St.) and all of the area East of Fuller Avenue (except for the Midland portion around the Midland Point Road area).

Daryl resides East of Fuller Avenue, a large rural part of Penetanguishene obtained from Tay Township in the late 1990's. Daryl is the only candidate (for any position) that lives on a gravel road and one of only two or three Ward 2 candidates residing in a rural area of Penetanguishene. Some may consider this significant since the area East of Fuller comprises more than 2/3rds of Ward 2 while all four of the current Ward 2 Councillors live in the urban area.

Daryl is the only candidate (who is not an incumbent) that has attended most of the 2010 Council and Special Council Meetings. He is the only non-incumbent that has been present in 2010 to hear Council's deliberations and to keep current with the Town's business so that he can hit the ground running when elected.

Daryl is employed by the Township of Tay as the Township's Information and Communications Technology Coordinator (ICT Coordinator). At Tay, Daryl manages geographically dispersed, reliable and secure networks for day-to-day operations, critical infrastructure and emergency management. As the ICT Coordinator, Daryl is involved with projects and operations across all of the municipality's departments. This gives him an insider's insight into the functions of all municipal departments. Such first hand experience would be of great value to any member of a municipal council.

Community Involvement

Daryl is also a Vice President at the Apache Software Foundation where he is the Chair of the Apache SpamAssassin project. SpamAssassin is the #1 open source email spam filter in the world. It is used by local ISPs and hundreds of thousands of global organizations.

Each year, since 1999, Daryl volunteers to maintain the website for the Wasaga Under Siege 1812 Historical Re-enactment event. This is the successor to the highly successful Battle of Georgian Bay event, that used to be held at Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene, for which he also maintained the website.

Daryl volunteers, since 2002, on an annual or so basis, for a solid week, at St. Theresa's High School mentoring students in musical stage lighting, sound design and set construction.

During the summer months Daryl also runs the projectors at the Midland Drive-In Theatre. While he enjoys doing it, he feels that having the Drive-In is something that the public appreciates, so he does it a bit like a public service. The pay alone certainly isn't worth the time involved.

In years past, before insurance costs became prohibitive (causing cancellation of the event), Daryl also volunteered his time and ATV during Winterama to pull snowmobiles out of the water during the puddle jump event that attracted thousands of spectators.

Thanks for voting!

Thanks to all of you that came out to vote. Whether you voted for Daryl (resulting in Daryl being elected) or any other candidate, it was good to see an approximately 50% voter turn out. It's a good improvement over past elections. Hopefully this improvement will become a trend in future elections, getting us closer to a respectable 75% plus turnout.
